19/21 May - Provence and Camargue
Day 1 – Friday 19 May 2023 * Meeting of the participants the group at
morning and departure by Gran Turismo coach. During the highway journey on the
Ligurian Rivieras and then on the Côte d'Azur, convenient stops for both the former
breakfast, (optional), that for lunch-breck. In the early afternoon I arrive at
AVIGNON, historic city enclosed within fourteenth-century walls, protagonist in history
of the Church in the period defined as the "captivity of Avignon". In the Middle Ages it housed seven
Popes and two French Antipopes in the majestic and vast decorated Palace of the Popes
with frescoes by Italian painters (guided tour inside); also take a look at
famous Bezenet Bridge, for years the only stone bridge to cross the Rhone.
Transfer to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
Day 2 – Saturday 20 May 2023 * Breakfast, dinner and night at the hotel. Day
dedicated to the ROMAN REMAINS with a first stop at PONT du GARD,
Roman aqueduct in perfect state of conservation with three superimposed arches of
dramatic impact. Then in the nearby NIMES city of ancient Roman origins
characterized by its grandiose arena (intact!) which is then revived in the heart
of the stupendous ARLES with Roman finds right in the center of the city on the
banks of the Rhone as the 2,000-year-old theatre. A completely dedicated day
to Roman art which has left its artistic and architectural imprint over the centuries
during the conquests of Gaul.
Day 3 – Sunday 21 May 2023 * The day is dedicated to
CAMARGUE; the charm of this brackish area of the Rhône Delta has enchanted
poets such as Mistral and continues to attract tourists from all over the world. Transformed into
Natural Park in 1970, it is home to flamingos and "step" birds in addition to the large ones
herds of fighting bulls and those of the legendary white horses. To the
center, on the shores of the sea, at the exit of the "arms of the great river", stands the
town of LES SAINTES MARIES del la MER with a unique fortified church
of the XII' sec.. Here every year at the end of May and the end of October they meet in
pilgrimage wandering gypsies from all over Europe. Not far from
also visit the fortified city of AIGUES MORTES: kings and crusaders departed from here
towards the Holy Land setting sail from this village built by Louis IX.
The ambiance feels like it used to be thanks to the architecture perfectly
preserved. The impressive fortified wall, the Tour de Constance and the
stroll through the streets of the village. Free lunch and return trip
afternoon/evening with final arrival in the late evening.
